Security services are processing services or communication
services that improve the security of data processing and information transfer
systems of an organization. The security services are required to counter
security attacks, by using different security mechanisms. Data confidentiality,
Data integrity, Authentication, non-repudiation, and access control are
categories of security services.

Security
services are
services provided by the layer of open systems that communicate and
ensure the proper security of the system or data transmission as defined in the ITU TX.800 Recommendation. A more general definition can be found in CNSS Order No. 4009, April 26, 2010, from the United States National Security Systems Commission. Ability to support one or more security requirements (confidentiality, integrity,
availability). Examples of security services include key management, access control, and authentication. Another reliable definition can be found in the W3C Glossary of Web Services adapted from NIST SP80095.

Authentication: The assurance that the communicating entity is the one that it

Authentication: Used in association with a
logical connection to provide confidence in the identity of the entities
connected.
