San Miguel Beer is a reference to San Miguel Pale Pilsen, a pale lager made in the Philippines by San Miguel Brewery (a subsidiary of San Miguel Corporation). San Miguel Brewery, Inc. signed the "Manila Agreement" in 1953 to start a new brewery in Spain called La Segarra, S.A. The company's name was changed to San Miguel Fabricas de Cerveza y Malta, S.A. in 1957, when it became a subsidiary of San Miguel Brewery, Inc., which at first owned 20% of the company through its Hong Kong branch. 



In 1965, San Miguel came to Africa, and by 1967, it had spread to cities like London, Paris, and Berlin in Europe. It bought the Spanish-Dutch beer brand Gulder and the factory where it was made in Burgos in 1970. With a total capacity of 600,000 hl, the three factories made up 7% of the national market. Thanks to Spain's gradual opening and the work of the exports department, beer exports to both Western and Eastern Europe and Northern Africa grew in the 1970s, reaching 125,000 hl per year.

Groupe Danone sold the company to Mahou, S.A. in 2000. Together, Mahou and San Miguel Group became Spain's largest brewery. In February 2014, San Miguel Corporation and Mahou-San Miguel signed an agreement to work together to promote San Miguel Beer and grow its presence around the world.

The Philippine Basketball Association has a professional basketball team called the San Miguel Beermen (PBA). Since 1975, it has been owned by the San Miguel Corporation (SMC). It is owned by the SMC group of companies, which also owns the Magnolia Hotshots and the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel. It is the only original team still in the PBA, and it has won the most PBA titles (27 so far) of any team.
