What type of beer is Pale Pilsen?

Pale lagers include pilsner, pilsener, and just plain pils. It gets its name from the Bohemian city of Plze (German: Pilsen), where the Pilsner Urquell Brewery created the first pale lager in history in 1842, currently known as Pilsner Urquell.

Although Plze was granted brewing privileges in 1307, the pale pilsen of Bohemian beers were top-fermented until the mid-1840s. The brewery is today known as Pilsner Urquell Brewery, but its original name was Bürger-Brauerei Pilsen (Czech: Mansk pivovar Plze, English: Citizens' Brewery). They started brewing beer in the Bavarian manner here.

Lager, or gelagert [stored] in German, is beer that has been aged in caves. This process increases the beer's purity and shelf life. A portion of this research profited from information that was previously outlined in a book by Brno-based Czech brewer Franz Andreas Paupie (1753–1805), which was published in German in 1794 and Czech in 1799.

The Plze brewery hired the Bavarian brewer Josef Groll (1813–1887), who on October 5, 1842, created the first batch of pale lager using elements from the area. A clear, golden beer was created by combining the extraordinarily soft water of Plze, Saaz noble hops from the nearby town of atec, low-protein Moravian barley grain, and Bavarian-style lagering.

The beer was sold at 35 bars in Prague by 1853. It visited Vienna in 1856 and Paris in 1862. At the Plze Chamber of Commerce and Trade in 1859, Pilsner Bier was registered as a trademark name. The Pilsner Urquell trademark, which stands for "original source," was developed in 1898 to emphasize the brewery's claim to be the first.

Modern innovations:

Carl von Linde's introduction of modern refrigeration to Germany in the late 19th century did away with the requirement for caverns to store beer, allowing the brewing of cool fermenting beer in a variety of different places. In the cellars below its brewery, the Pilsner Urquell brewery brewed its beer using open barrels until 1993. With the introduction of huge cylindrical tanks, this changed in 1993. To compare flavors, small samples are still brewed the old-fashioned way.

Modern pale lagers, sometimes known as pilsners, can range in color from pale to bright yellow and can have different amounts of hop flavor and fragrance. Pilsner beer alcohol content varies, but is normally between 4.5% and 5%. (by volume). Beer contests, such as the World Beer Cup, have categories like "European-Style Pilsner." Numerous small breweries and larger conglomerates promote Pilsner-style lagers on a global scale.

While many breweries reserve the moniker "Urtyp Pilsener" (UP) for their best beer, certain beers carry the designation because they are made using the traditional method. keep reading...
