Why do they call it rubbing alcohol?

Rub-on alcohol is either a liquid made of isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Products made of isopropyl alcohol are the most common. Surgical spirit is like this in the British Pharmacopoeia (BP). Even though rubbing alcohol is made from ethanol, it can't be drunk because it has bitterants added to it.

They are liquids that are mostly used as alcoplus alcohol on the skin. They can also be used in many industries and at home. In North American English, the term "rubbing alcohol" can mean either isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol) or ethyl alcohol (ethanol).

The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) says that "isopropyl rubbing alcohol USP" has about 70 percent pure isopropyl alcohol by volume and that "rubbing alcohol USP" has about 70 percent denatured alcohol by volume. In Ireland and the UK, a similar medicine is called surgical spirit B.P., which is made up of 95% methylated spirit, 2.5% castor oil, 2% diethyl phthalate, and 0.5% methyl salicylate, according to the British Pharmacopoeia. Methyl salicylate, which is also known as "wintergreen oil," is often added to rubbing alcohol products in North America. Manufacturers are allowed to use their own standards for making rubbing alcohol. The ethanol content on the label of rubbing alcohol sold in stores ranges from 70% to 99% v/v, depending on the manufacturer.

In the middle of the 1920s, "rubbing alcohol" became a well-known term in North America. The first rubbing alcohol was used as a massage oil, which is how it got its name. The first rubbing alcohol wasn't exactly like the surgical spirit we use today. In some versions, it was scented and had different ingredients, like a higher concentration of methyl salicylate.

The name "rubbing" also made it clear that the alcohol wasn't meant to be drunk. This was a big deal in the United States during Prohibition, but by 1925, it was already being used as a substitute for alcohol. All rubbing alcohols are dangerous for people to drink. Isopropyl rubbing alcohols don't have the ethyl alcohol found in alcoholic drinks, and ethyl rubbing alcohols are made from denatured alcohol, which is a mixture of ethyl alcohol and one or more bitter poisons that make the substance poisonous.

Using Formula 23-H, the US Treasury Department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms says that all rubbing alcohols, which are defined as those that contain ethanol, must have poisonous additives to prevent people from drinking them.
